The Champion is a 2004 Singaporean Mandarin-language swimming drama produced by Mediacorp Channel 8. It aired from October 20 to November 16, 2004 and has 20 episodes. The show features a young cast including Qi Yuwu, Jeanette Aw, Fiona Xie, Felicia Chin, Joyce Chao, Jesseca Liu (in her acting debut), Julian Hee, Yen Hsing-su, Toro, Jamie Yeo, and more. The opening theme is 任我遨游 (Ren Wo Ao You).
Plot
The series follows the Flying Fish swimming team and their rivalry with the Seagulls. After the Flying Fish lose a bet to the Seagulls and cause a public mishap on Orchard Road, the team hires a strict new coach, Ivan Jackson (Wu Zhenkang). His tough training gradually improves the team’s performance, though he faces resistance at first.
Subplots
- Guo Jingwen, nicknamed “Tardy Queen,” comes from a poor, troubled family. Her sister uses a wheelchair, her brother is a rebellious teen, and Jingwen works as a swimming coach to help the family. The coach’s harsh rules are relaxed for her after he learns about her situation. Jingwen’s relationship with coach Wu Zhenkang becomes complicated and nearly affects his own marriage.
- Lu Kaixin and He Yilin are competing for Xie Jiajun’s affection. Yilin betrays Kaixin by doping in a race, which costs Kaixin a gold medal. Yilin later joins the Seagulls, but Kaixin defeats her in a swimming duel and Yilin is expelled. The Flying Fish eventually forgives Yilin.
