The Cellar (2022 film)
The Cellar is a 2022 supernatural horror film written and directed by Brendan Muldowney, starring Elisha Cuthbert and Eoin Macken. It tells the story of a family who move into an old estate with their children, Ellie and Steven. When Ellie disappears from a hidden cellar filled with strange formulas and symbols, her mother Kiera investigates the house’s history and learns about Leviathan and a doorway to another dimension. As terrifying events unfold, Kiera and her husband Brian race to find Ellie and stop the demon Baphomet from controlling the house. They eventually realize they are trapped in the demon’s dimension and must count upward to try to escape.
The Cellar is a co-production between Ireland and Belgium. It was filmed in November 2020 in Roscommon, Ireland. The film premiered at South by Southwest in March 2022 and was released by Shudder on April 15, 2022. It runs 94 minutes and is in English. The production company is RLJE Films, and Shudder distributed the film. The movie holds a 31% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 62 reviews, with critics noting it’s a passable but not standout entry in the haunted-house genre.
