The Cadre (newspaper)
The Cadre is the student newspaper of the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) in Charlottetown, run by the UPEI Student Union. It appears online and in print. The paper stopped its print edition in 2012 and became online-only, but print was brought back in 2022. Print editions are released weekly in the fall and winter semesters, with online updates happening more often. The Cadre's current sections are News, Features, Arts & Culture, Humour, and Opinion.
The Cadre has won recognition for its humour writing, receiving a JHM Award at the 2018 NASH Conference in Toronto. The newspaper has also faced several controversies and changes over the years. In December 2002, it published a satirical piece titled “Christfucking Christmas,” which offended some readers and led to the Editor-in-Chief being replaced and closer oversight by the UPEI Student Union. In fall 2004, the Editor-in-Chief resigned over a dispute about accepting ads from local bars that competed with the Student Union’s bar. The paper also published the Muhammad cartoons from Jyllands-Posten, which prompted the university administration to remove copies from campus circulation and sparked debates about press freedom and responsibility. In spring 2014, a piece criticizing students’ beachwear drew strong criticism; the paper later amended the piece and then pulled it within 72 hours.
In early 2007, the UPEI Student Union started a renewal process for The Cadre and considered merging it with the UPEI Independent Student Media Society (to gain more autonomy and new-media capabilities). The Cadre opposed the merger, arguing it would harm independence. The renewal committee was restructured to include a Cadre editor as a representative, along with staff and community members, and was given a deadline to explore options, including greater autonomy for The Cadre.
The Cadre’s website is thecadreupei.com, and its editor-in-chief has included Syed Imran Ali, with Jake MacCallum playing a role in restoring the print edition in 2022.
