Taedong Bridge
The Taedong Bridge is a bridge over the Taedong River in Pyongyang, North Korea. It was built by the Japanese and finished in 1905. It is one of Pyongyang’s oldest east–west bridges across the Taedong River, along with the Yanggak Bridge built in the same year.
The bridge was largely destroyed during the Korean War. In the winter of 1950, as Chinese troops advanced toward Pyongyang, thousands of civilians fled to the ruined bridge to cross the river, and several people were killed.
A famous photo of the event, taken on December 5, 1950 by Max Desfor, shows refugees crossing the wrecked bridge. The image won the Pulitzer Prize for Photography in 1951.
In Korean, the bridge is called Daedonggyo.
