Peter Funke, born on 18 March 1950 in Rheine, is a German historian who specializes in ancient Greece and Rome. He studied history and German at the University of Münster (1969–1974) and earned his doctorate and a senior teaching qualification at the University of Cologne (doctorate in 1978, habilitation in 1985). He taught and conducted research at Cologne and Siegen before becoming a professor at Münster in 1988, where he has worked since. He leads a project on the historical geography and regionalism of ancient Greece and has served as Pro-rector for Teaching and Student Affairs at Münster since 1991. In 1999 he declined a professorship at Munich. Funke’s work covers the Greek state system from Mycenaean times to Rome, Greek historiography, ancient constitutional history, regionalism and geography, and the relationship between religion and rulership in antiquity. He has held numerous leadership roles in German academia, including positions with the German Archaeological Institute and the German Research Foundation, and he edits the journal Klio.
