Wojciech Bożek
Wojciech Stanisław Bożek, born 1 February 1961 in Gliwice, is a Polish diplomat who specializes in the Middle East and high‑risk security regions. He has served as Poland’s ambassador to Kuwait (2001–2005), Libya (2010–2012) and Lebanon (2013–2017). He has also held various senior posts in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and worked at several embassies, including Cairo, Tripoli, Abu Dhabi and Damascus.
Bożek studied Arab studies at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, graduating in 1986, and studied at the Polish Institute of International Affairs in 1987. He began his diplomatic career in 1986 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Early postings included Cairo and Tripoli; he opened and led the Abu Dhabi embassy in 1991–1993 and served in Damascus as chargé d’affaires from 1993 to 1996. He then worked in Warsaw as head of the Africa and Middle East unit handling Maghreb and Mashriq.
From 2001 to 2005 he was ambassador to Kuwait (also accredited to Bahrain). After returning to Warsaw, he was deputy director of the Africa and Middle East Department until 2007, and represented Poland in the Anna Lindh Foundation and the Union for the Mediterranean. He was chargé d’affaires in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from 2007 to 2008. His later postings included Libya (2010–2012) and Lebanon (2013–2017). During the Libyan civil war in 2011 he helped evacuate the embassy to Benghazi.
In 2023–2024 he worked in the Office of the Head of the Office for Foreigners, and on 1 April 2024 he returned to the MFA to work in the Africa and the Middle East Department. On 7 February 2025 he became chargé d’affaires ad interim of the Polish embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. He received the Bene Merito honorary badge in 2011 for his role in evacuations. He speaks Polish, English, Arabic and Russian, with some French. He has one daughter.
