TV50 was a year-long celebration in 2012 of RTÉ Television’s 50th anniversary since it launched on 31 December 1961 (then Telefís Éireann). The project began online with a placeholder site on 26 December 2011, and the full TV50 site went live at 12 noon on New Year’s Eve. During 2012, RTÉ released up to 20 archive programmes each month on RTÉ Player as part of TV50. RTÉ also ran a nationwide search to find new voices in video documentary making; the search was designed to be forward-looking and open to applicants aged 18 or over with relevant experience.
