John Frog, born Aguek Michael Mahok Maming Turalei on 1 January 1993, is a South Sudanese Afrobeat and hip hop musician. He hails from Turalei Payam in Warrap State and is a member of the Guondo Gang. His breakout hit “Guondo Sakit” made him popular across East Africa. He speaks Dinka, Juba Arabic, English, and some Kiswahili.

John’s parents were soldiers in the Sudan People’s Liberation Army, and he joined the army as a child around age 10, receiving his first firearm at 14. The civil war disrupted his education, but he completed secondary school at Juba Day Senior Secondary School in 2018. He was nicknamed Aguek, meaning “frog,” because he was a breech baby. As a student, he enjoyed entertaining friends and dreamed of becoming a big artist.

He began making music in the early 2010s and rose to fame in 2018 with “Guondo Sakit,” a Juba Arabic phrase meaning “a common person.” He also released a remix of the song with Harmonize from Tanzania. John Frog has collaborated with various artists across Africa.

His career has included public disagreements with his early manager K2 (Koryom), who he says tried to take advantage of him; the dispute was settled with help from K2’s sister Achai Wiir. In 2021 he had a fallout with another manager, Lucky Charm. Between April and May 2023, fans voted him among the top 10 best artists in South Sudan, and Eye Radio recognized him for his work. John Frog has been active in music from 2014 to the present.
