Victor George Cavanagh (1874–11 June 1952), known as Old Vic, was a New Zealand rugby administrator and coach. Born in Dunedin, he helped develop the game with his son, Young Vic Cavanagh. He captained Dunedin's Southern Club after it formed in 1899 and also played for Otago that year. As a coach, he led Southern to three Otago championships before World War I, then coached University A to ten championships between 1923 and 1934. He was a national selector in 1913. In 1929 he introduced the loose scrum and a 3-4-1 scrum shape, which helped lighter forwards win the ball; the Southern style refined by Young Vic helped Otago dominate provincial rugby before World War II. He died in 1952.
