Türkmennebit
Türkmennebit is Turkmenistan’s national oil company. It is state-owned and was created on July 1, 1996, after reorganizing parts of the former Ministry of Oil and Gas. The company is based in Ashgabat, and its chairman is Guvanch Velinazarovich Agajanov.
Türkmennebit runs the country’s oil and gas fields in the Balkan Province near the Caspian Sea, handling exploration, extraction, processing, and the sale of oil, gas, and by-products. It also oversees major processing facilities, including the Turkmenbashi complex of oil refineries and the Seydi refinery, and it works with related institutes and departments to develop the oil industry. The company aims to introduce advanced technologies and align with international practices.
Türkmennebit cooperates with international partners to improve production and technology. Partners have included Yug Neftegaz (Singapore), Tatneft (Russia), Sinopec (China), Dragon Oil (Turkmenistan), and Eni Türkmenistan Limited, among others. In 2017, a deep well at Uzynada in the Caspian region yielded a large flow of gas and condensate, highlighting the area’s potential. The Turkmenbashi and Seydi refineries produce a range of products, such as gasoline, diesel, kerosene, bitumen, and other fuels, for domestic use and export.
In May 2023, The Guardian reported alleged high methane emissions from Turkmenistan’s oil and gas operations, including flaring and leaks. Estimates based on available data suggested substantial methane releases in 2022, totaling several million tonnes and equating to hundreds of millions of tonnes of CO2, a figure that dwarfs the UK’s 2022 emissions.
