Sussex East was a European Parliament constituency in the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1994. It was renamed East Sussex in 1984. The area elected one Member of the European Parliament (MEP) by the first-past-the-post system. When created in 1979, it covered the Westminster constituencies of Brighton Kemptown, Brighton Pavilion, Eastbourne, East Grinstead, Hastings, Hove, Lewes and Rye. In 1984 the boundaries were changed to include Bexhill and Battle, Brighton Kemptown, Brighton Pavilion, Eastbourne, Hastings and Rye, Hove, Lewes and Wealden. The sole MEP during its existence was Sir Jack Stewart-Clark of the Conservative Party, who later represented East Sussex and Kent South until 1999. The UK used first-past-the-post for European elections in England, Scotland and Wales until 1999, when it moved to proportional representation for those elections.
