Suomen Luonto
Suomen Luonto (Nature of Finland) is Finland’s largest nature magazine. It is based in Helsinki and published by the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation (Suomen luonnonsuojeluliitto). The magazine is independent and its profits support nature protection work. It comes out ten times a year. Since 2016, the editor-in-chief has been Heikki Vasamies.
Suomen Luonto covers current topics in nature and the environment, with news and in-depth articles about Finnish nature and international subjects. It includes English abstracts and is available in public libraries.
The magazine began in 1941. It started as a yearbook and, in 1956, became a magazine published four times a year. In the 1960s, environmental topics were included and sometimes sparked debate. In 1971 it became a subscription magazine, no longer part of the association’s membership fee.
By 2022, Suomen Luonto had about 155,000 readers, and its total reach (including digital) was about 193,000. Its social media channels have over 200,000 followers. The magazine won the Quality Magazine of the Year award in 2011, and its articles have won Aikakausmedia’s Edit competition several times, including a 2020 photo reportage award and a 2017 lifestyle story award.
