Stuart Hall Library
The Stuart Hall Library is the special collections library and archive of Iniva (Institute of International Visual Art). It is in Pimlico, London, on the campus of Chelsea College of Arts but operates independently of the college.
The library holds over 10,000 items, including books, magazines, slides, videos, CDs, photos and sound recordings, with more than 4,000 exhibition catalogues from around the world.
Its focus is contemporary art from Britain, Europe and the Americas by artists with African, Afro-Caribbean, African-American, South Asian, East Asian, Oceanian and Latin American backgrounds. It also specializes in art from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania.
The collection is for reference only—materials can be read on site but cannot be borrowed. The catalogue is online, and registration and use of the library are free to the public.
The library began in 1994 at Rivington Place and was renamed Stuart Hall Library in 2007 in honour of Stuart Hall, a leading cultural studies scholar and the founding chair of Iniva. It moved to Pimlico in October 2018, into premises leased from Chelsea College of Arts.
