Sport in Samoa
Sport in Samoa is diverse, but rugby dominates. Rugby union is the main sport and is played all over the islands. Rugby league is also very popular. Other well-known sports include netball and soccer. Samoan communities abroad, like in American Samoa, often follow and play American football, basketball, and baseball.
Rugby union
Samoa’s national rugby union team has played in every Rugby World Cup since 1991 and is usually among the world’s top 20 teams. Record holders include Brian Lima (most caps and most tries), Tusi Pisi (most points), Semo Sititi (most matches as captain), and Gavin Williams (most points in a match). Elvis Seveali'i and Alesana Tuilagi are tied for most tries in a single match.
Rugby league
The national rugby league team has reached the Rugby League World Cup quarter-finals in 2000, 2013 and 2017, and the final in 2021. Samoa is known for producing many NRL players, including Samoan New Zealanders and Samoan Australians who also play in the Super League and other leagues in the northern hemisphere. Since 2008, Samoan-descended players have been part of every Rugby League World Cup-winning side for New Zealand or Australia. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is a standout, winning the Golden Boot in 2019 and the Dally M Medal in 2018.
American football
American football is popular but smaller than rugby. Samoa has produced a very high number of NFL players relative to its population. Boys born to Samoan parents are especially likely to reach the NFL. Notable moments include Al Lolotai becoming the first Polynesian in the NFL (1945), Marcus Mariota winning the Heisman Trophy (2014), Junior Seau’s Pro Football Hall of Fame induction (2015), and Troy Polamalu winning the Defensive Player of the Year (2010). Ken Niumatalolo is regarded as a pioneering Polynesian college football coach.
Soccer (association football)
Soccer is growing in Samoa. The national team is ranked around the 149th level in the world. Tim Cahill, who played for Australia, represented Samoa in youth teams and later helped Australia achieve World Cup milestones. Cahill’s career also included becoming Australia’s all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history.
Australian rules football and basketball
Australian rules football (Samoa Rules) has been played since the 1990s, with the Samoa Australian Rules Football Association governing the sport. The national team is known as the Bulldogs and has hosted coaching clinics. Samoa is active in basketball too, hosting the FIBA Polynesian Cup. Samoan descent players have reached the NBA, including James Johnson and others, and Samoa has produced notable basketball talent through the years.
Boxing and mixed martial arts
Boxing has a strong presence. Maselino Masoe won the WBA world middleweight title in 2004, and Joseph Parker won the WBO heavyweight title in 2016. Other Samoan boxers have challenged for world titles. In mixed martial arts, many fighters of Samoan descent compete in the UFC, including Max Holloway and Robert Whittaker, who have won UFC titles. Samoan fighters have also found success in other MMA organizations.
Netball and volleyball
Netball is especially popular among girls and remains a key sport in schools and clubs. Samoa’s netball team has competed in every INF Netball World Cup since 1991 and earns medals at Pacific Games. Volleyball is growing, with Samoan players appearing in international events and prominent achievements in beach volleyball.
Wrestling and sumo
Samoans have a long tradition in professional wrestling, with the Anoaʻi family and others playing major roles in global promotions. The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) is the most famous name from this line. Samoan wrestlers continue to be prominent in wrestling circuits around the world.
Olympics and weightlifting
Samoa has produced Olympic medalists, including Ele Opeloge, who won Samoa’s first Olympic medal (silver) in weightlifting in 2008. Samoan athletes have competed in many sports at the Olympic Games, including track and field and swimming.
Cricket and other sports
Cricket is a minor sport in Samoa, with the national team competing in regional events. The country also participates in youth cricket development. Samoan athletes continue to explore many other sports and compete internationally in various disciplines.
In short, while rugby remains the heart of sport in Samoa, the country’s athletes excel across many sports, from football and boxing to wrestling, basketball, and the Olympics.
