Spanfeller Media Group
Spanfeller Media Group (SMG) is a New York City-based digital media company and a subsidiary of Tribune Publishing. It was founded in 2010 by Jim Spanfeller, who previously led Forbes.com’s digital strategy. SMG runs two specialty sites: The Daily Meal (food and drink) and The Active Times (outdoor sports and an active lifestyle).
SMG aims to emphasize great content and to have its sites design and produce content by, for, and about the web, focusing on broad vertical topics without a single dominant player. The company raised about $13.8 million in funding before Tribune Publishing bought it. Tribune Publishing (then known as Tronc) said in its 2017 Form 10-K that it completed the acquisition of SMG for about $7.6 million.
SMG’s leadership includes Jim Spanfeller (President & CEO), Jeff Bauer (Chief Product Officer), Jacqueline Stone (Senior Vice President, Marketing), Philip Barber (Chief Technology Officer), and Sharon Jautz (Vice President, Human Resources).
Jim Spanfeller previously led Forbes.com and has served on advisory boards for several early-stage web startups. He has received industry honors, including the IAB’s Founders Award for lifetime achievement, and he is involved with the Online Publishers Association and the IAB.
