Merope (Giacomelli)
Merope (Giacomelli) is an opera seria in three acts by Geminiano Giacomelli, with a libretto by Apostolo Zeno. It was dedicated to Karl August, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont, and premiered in 1734 at the Teatro Grimani di San Giovanni Grisostomo in Venice. The stage designer was Alessandro Mauro, the costume designer Natale Canciani, and the choreographer Francesco Aquilante. The opera features the famous aria "Sposa, non mi conosci" sung by Epitide. Vivaldi later used this aria in his pasticcio Bajazet, renaming it "Sposa son disprezzata" due to the new text. Another notable aria is "Quell'usignolo," also sung by Epitide, renowned for its difficult coloratura. The full opera has never been recorded.
