FC Bayern Munich 1–2 Norwich City F.C. (1993)
On 19 October 1993, in Munich’s Olympiastadion, Norwich City shocked Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup second round first leg. Attendance was 28,500, and the referee was Leif Sundell of Sweden.
Norwich took a 2–0 lead in the first half: Jeremy Goss volleyed from about 20 yards, and Mark Bowen headed in a second. Bayern pulled one back before half-time through Christian Nerlinger, but Norwich held on to win 2–1. Goss’s goal is regarded as one of Norwich’s greatest, and the result marked a famous upset for the English club.
The second leg, played on 3 November 1993 at Carrow Road, finished 1–1, giving Norwich a 3–2 aggregate victory and a clash with Inter Milan in the next round. Norwich’s European run ended there, while Bayern went on to win the Bundesliga that season. Norwich finished 12th in the Premier League that year.
