Justicia californica: a simple guide

What is it?
Justicia californica is a deciduous flowering shrub native to the deserts of southern California, southern Arizona, and northern Mexico. It’s also known as beloperone, chuparosa, or hummingbird bush. It’s a medium-sized plant that helps add bright color to desert landscapes and can attract hummingbirds.

Where it grows
This plant likes hot, dry, sandy or rocky desert areas with good drainage. It usually grows below about 750 meters (2,460 feet) in elevation. It is drought-tolerant and performs best in full sun.

What it looks like
- Size: up to about 1.5 meters (around 5 feet) tall and wide.
- Leaves: small and briefly present, then it produces many tubular flowers.
- Flowers: bright to deep red most often, sometimes yellow, blooming from February to June. The flowers are tubular with two lips and are designed to attract pollinators.

Ecology and pollination
Hummingbirds are the main pollinators for this plant, and bees also visit for nectar. The flower shape helps ensure pollination as birds and insects drink the nectar.

Uses
- In the wild, Native American groups and Spanish people are said to have eaten the flower and used the nectar in salads.
- The plant contains compounds with antimicrobial properties and other phytochemicals. Some glycosides found in the plant have been studied for potential heart-related uses.
- It’s popular as an ornamental desert plant because of its bright flowers and its ability to attract birds.

Cultivation tips
- It’s low-maintenance once established.
- Best in fast-draining soil (sandy or gravelly) with a pH of about 6.0–8.0.
- Requires a lot of sun; drought-tolerant and needs only infrequent watering after establishment (a deep soak about once a month in dry periods).
- It can propagate itself in the right desert garden conditions.

Taxonomy and names
- Binomial name: Justicia californica
- Family: Acanthaceae
- Common names: beloperone, chuparosa, hummingbird bush

In short, Justicia californica is a hardy desert shrub that brightens arid yards with red (sometimes yellow) tubular flowers and helps feed hummingbirds and bees.
