Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) is a private engineering and technology institute located in Majitar, Pakyong district, Sikkim, India. It was set up in 1996 as one of India’s early public–private partnerships between the Sikkim government and Manipal Education & Medical Group. The institute began on a temporary campus in Tadong and moved to its 33‑acre permanent campus at Majitar in 1999. SMIT is part of the Manipal Group and is approved by the AICTE and UGC, with NAAC accreditation (A+), NBA accreditation for CSE and IT, and ISO 9001 certification.

SMIT offers 13 departments with undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in engineering, management, computer applications, and basic sciences. Admissions are through SMIT’s online entrance test for engineering, with a few seats reserved for MET and JEE. The college provides scholarships to meritorious and needy students.

In rankings, SMIT has been recognized among top private engineering colleges in the region; in 2024, it was placed in the 201–300 band in the NIRF engineering rankings.

Campus life and facilities are designed for comfort and convenience. The campus sits beside the Teesta river and includes twin‑sharing hostels (with some singles/doubles), 24×7 Wi‑Fi, medical facilities, and uninterrupted electricity and water. There is an indoor sports complex, a large food court, and a central library of about 2,960 square meters with 428 seats, connected to DELNET. On‑campus facilities also include banking, ATMs, a post office, stationery shops, and other amenities. The institute hosts seven technical and cultural clubs and organizes events such as SAE Supra, ACM‑ICPC, Nasscom Smart City Hackathon, and Spring Fest. The annual techno‑cultural festival is Kaalrav, and TEDxSMIT is also held. The campus publishes The Smitsonian magazine, and student life is supported by an active Student Council and a Mess and Canteen Committee.

SMIT emphasizes research through 13 research centers and over 52 sponsored projects worth about Rs 15.4 crore. It also houses AIC‑SMUTBI, a technology business incubator supported by the Atal Innovation Mission of NITI Aayog, with a grant of Rs 8 crore to foster startups in the Northeast.
