Khaliq Dina Hall
Khaliq Dina Hall is a library and event hall in Karachi, Pakistan, located on M.A. Jinnah Road. It was built in 1906 with funds from Ghulam Hoosain Khaliqdina, a wealthy local merchant who wanted Muslims in Karachi to have a space for literature and learning. The building was designed by architect Moses Somake in a Palladian style, featuring a 10-foot veranda and 12 Ionic columns that give it a Greek-temple look.
The hall’s exterior measures about 525 by 325 feet, and the main interior hall is 95 by 45 feet with a 30-foot-high ceiling, able to seat around 600 people. The original teak roof collapsed during a heavy rain in 1994. It has since undergone renovations in 1959, 1996, and 2002, with the 2002 restoration by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation costing about 15 million rupees. Today the complex includes a large hall, a library, and a room that serves as the office of a local NGO, and it is protected as a Cultural Heritage Site of Sindh.
Khaliq Dina Hall has hosted many important events, such as the 1921 Sedition Trial of Maulana Shaukat Ali and Maulana Mohammad Ali Jouhar, and the 1949 first session of the Pakistan Muslim League Council attended by Liaquat Ali Khan. It has also hosted Muharram gatherings led by noted scholars and speeches by figures like Dada Amir Haider Khan in 1970.
