Sidonius (Irish saint)
Sidonius, also known as Saëns or Sidoine in French and Séadna in Irish, was an Irish-born monk who became a French saint. He was the spiritual teacher of Leutfridus and is honored by both the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches.
Born in the 7th century, Sidonius became a monk at Jumièges Abbey in 664, then spent years traveling between monasteries. He lived in Rome for ten years as a companion of Saint Ouen, and later was sent to lead a monastery near Rouen. The Rouen area monastery, named Saint-Saëns in his honor, lasted until the 9th century. He founded several other monasteries nearby before retiring to live as a monk.
Sidonius died around 690, and his feast day is November 14.
