Wingback (American football)
A wingback (WB) is an offensive backfield position in American football. The wingback lines up off the line of scrimmage, usually a step behind and outside a tight end. The role is versatile: the wingback can block, take a handoff, or run downfield to catch a pass. Formations like the single-wing use a wingback. Today, few college or pro teams use the position. A famous example is Johnny Rodgers of Nebraska, who played wingback and won the Heisman Trophy in 1972.
