Sharon, Lois & Bram
Sharon, Lois & Bram are a Canadian children's music group from Toronto, formed in 1978. The original members were Sharon Hampson, Lois Lilienstein, and Bram Morrison. They met through the Mariposa in the Schools program and decided to make lively, high-quality music for kids, mixing styles like rock, Broadway, and calypso. Their first album, One Elephant, Deux Éléphants, became one of Canada’s best-selling children’s albums.
They became famous on TV with The Elephant Show on CBC (and later on Nickelodeon in the United States), featuring a life-size elephant puppet and guest stars. A second show, Skinnamarink TV, ran from 1997 to 1999.
In 1996 they served as UNICEF Canada’s spokespeople for its 50th anniversary. In 2000 Lilienstein retired from touring after her husband’s death, and the group often performed as Sharon, Bram & Friends with life-size animal puppets. Bram faced a benign tumor in 2005 and had treatment to protect his hearing. In 2014 a Sharon, Lois & Bram playground opened in Toronto.
Lois Lilienstein died in 2015. After that, Sharon Hampson and Bram Morrison continued as Sharon & Bram, and in 2018 they announced a farewell tour. Sharon later performed with her daughter as Sharon & Randi or Sharon, Randi and Friends; Bram largely retired from touring but contributed as a guest. In 2020 they started a YouTube channel with new videos.
The group won three Juno Awards for Best Children's Album (Smorgasbord, 1980; Singing ’n’ Swinging, 1981; Skinnamarink TV, 2000). They were honored with the Order of Canada in 2002 and received other medals for their contributions to music and culture.
