Shamsher Singh Surjewala
Shamsher Singh Surjewala (24 March 1932 – 20 January 2020) was an Indian lawyer and politician from Haryana, associated with the Indian National Congress. He served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha (1992–1998) and as a member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly for Narwana (1967–1972, 1977–1987, 1991–1992) and Kaithal (2005–2009). He also held roles as a minister in the Haryana government, leader of the opposition in the Haryana Assembly, and president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee. He was the father of Randeep Singh Surjewala.
Born in Jind (then part of Punjab), Surjewala began practicing law in 1957. As a student, he was expelled from Yadavindra State High School for supporting the Congress. He later served as managing director of the Central Bank of Sangrur and chairman of the Kalayat panchayat samiti in Kaithal. He worked for farmers’ rights and led groups such as the Haryana Krishak Samaj and the All India Kisan Congress. Surjewala died at AIIMS in New Delhi, aged 87.
