2016–17 Bengaluru FC season
The 2016–17 Bengaluru FC season was the club’s fourth. It ran from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, with competitive matches from September to May. Under new head coach Albert Roca, the team played at Sree Kanteerava Stadium.
AFC Cup and continental efforts
- Bengaluru FC made history by becoming the first Indian club to reach the AFC Cup final, but lost 1–0 to Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya in Doha.
- The club’s AFC Cup campaign began in March 2017 after the AFC Champions League knockouts. They reached the knockout stages and finished with a strong run, including memorable wins in the group and knockout rounds, before falling short in the final.
- In the AFC Champions League qualifiers, Bengaluru FC were eliminated in the Preliminary Round 2 by Al-Wehdat of Jordan, so they continued in the AFC Cup instead.
I-League campaign
- Bengaluru FC finished 4th in the I-League, marking the end of their campaigns in the I-League before switching to the Indian Super League.
- The season featured a bright start in the league with strong results, followed by a challenging spell of several matches without a win, before finishing the season on a high to secure a late surge into fourth place.
Federation Cup
- Bengaluru FC won the Federation Cup for the second time, defeating Mohun Bagan in the final. C.K. Vineeth scored twice in extra time to seal the win.
Players, transfers and key moments
- The club saw several departures and new arrivals. Sunil Chhetri returned on a permanent basis, and Amrinder Singh joined as goalkeeper. Foreign signings included Cameron Watson, Álvaro Rubio, and Juanan, with other midfielders and defenders added over the year.
- The squad also featured notable Indian players, with a number of loans from ISL clubs as Bengaluru balanced their AFC Cup commitments with domestic duties.
- Sunil Chhetri emerged as the club’s top scorer across all competitions with 12 goals; in the league he and C.K. Vineeth each scored 7.
Attendance and recognition
- The highest home attendance was 12,642 against East Bengal on February 25, 2017, while the lowest was 2,012 against Abahani Limited Dhaka on April 18, 2017. The average home league attendance was 8,752.
- Individual honors included Sunil Chhetri being named Hero of the League for the 2016–17 I-League season. Udanta Singh won both the players’ player and fans’ player awards at Bengaluru FC’s season awards. Other recognitions included Vineeth winning FPAI Player of the Year, and Udanta Singh being named the Young Player of the Year; Nishu Kumar was recognized as the most improved player.
