TJ Maxx is an American discount department store chain and the flagship brand of the TJX Companies. It operates more than 4,500 stores across nine countries, making it one of the largest clothing retailers in the United States. TJ Maxx sells men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and shoes, plus toys, beauty products, bags, jewelry, home decor, furniture, kitchenware, and more.

The company began in 1976 in Framingham, Massachusetts, created by Bernard Cammarata as part of the Zayre discount chain. The first TJ Maxx stores opened in 1977. Zayre later sold its store to Ames, and TJX Companies was formed in 1987, becoming the legal successor in 1989. The brand expanded to other countries as TK Maxx. TJX acquired Marshalls in 1995; A.J. Wright opened in 1998 and closed in 2007. TJX began online shopping in 2009.

TJ Maxx operates mainly as an off-price retailer, offering discounted brand-name items that may not be available at full-price department stores. In the United States, related brands include Marshalls and HomeGoods, and some stores share similar layouts and inventory.

Globally, TJ Maxx is known as TK Maxx outside North America. The company’s headquarters are in Framingham, Massachusetts. Key leaders include Ernie Herrman (CEO) and Carol Meyrowitz (executive chairman). In 2024, TJX reported revenue around $54 billion and employed about 349,000 people.

A major data breach was disclosed in 2007, revealing hackers had accessed payment data from more than 100 million customers. The breach led to legal action and criminal charges, including a 2010 sentence for the hacker Albert Gonzalez.
