Shades of Black is a community group in Handsworth, Birmingham. It started after the Handsworth riots in the 1980s and later expanded to help other deprived areas, including Stechford. The group runs two large allotments with local schools to teach disadvantaged children how to grow vegetables. The harvest is shared with elderly people who cook for themselves, with elderly day-care centres, and any extra is used at a local catering college to help students learn to cook foods from different cultures. The founder, Mrs E C McGhie-Belgrave, a former probation worker, was awarded an MBE by the Queen in 2002.
