Seattle General Hospital

Seattle General Hospital and School for Nurses was a hospital in Seattle, Washington. It opened in 1895 as a private Protestant hospital in Avon House on First Avenue. In 1897 it moved to the Sarah B. Yesler home, and in 1900 a new five‑story hospital opened at 909 Fifth Avenue after funds were raised by the Deaconess Home Society of the Methodist Church. A west wing added in 1905 increased beds to 125, and the Children’s Orthopedic Hospital was started there in 1907.

From 1897 to 1938, 598 student nurses trained at the hospital, and in 1935 the Methodist church stopped running it. The hospital offered a medical internship program from 1902 to 1961. In the 1950s and 1960s its facilities were expanded to include new surgery rooms, laboratories, and more beds.

By the late 1960s the trustees looked for a new location because the building was aging. The downtown site was sold to the Bank of California, and Seattle General began consolidating with nearby hospitals. On April 1, 1971 Seattle General took over Maynard Hospital. In 1978 Seattle General merged with The Doctors and Swedish Hospitals to form Swedish Medical Center. The Seattle General facility closed in June 1980 and moved to the Seattle Doctors Pavilion.
