Scientific reserves of New Zealand
Scientific reserves in New Zealand are protected areas owned by the government and managed by the Department of Conservation. They are kept for scientific study and education. They were created under the Reserves Act 1977 to protect and preserve forever for scientific study, education, and the country’s benefit. This includes ecological relationships, plant and animal communities, soil types, and landforms. Some reserves restrict access and require permits to enter.
