Schoenus (Boeotia)

Schoenus (also Schoinos) was an ancient city in Boeotia, east of Thebes. It is mentioned by Homer in the Iliad as part of Thersander’s domain in the Catalogue of Ships. The geographer Strabo places Schoenus on a river of the same name in Theban territory, on the road to Anthedon, about fifty stades from Thebes. The river most likely flows into Lake Hylica from the Mouriki valley, with rushes near its mouth; Nicander’s claim that Schoenus flows into Lake Copais is wrong. Schoenus was the birthplace of Atalanta, the daughter of Schoenus, and thus the poet Statius called the town “Atalantaeus.” The site is near the modern village of Mouriki in Greece.
