San Diego County Board of Supervisors

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors is the county’s main government body, handling both lawmaking and executive duties for the area. It has five members, each representing one of five districts. Officially nonpartisan, the board currently includes three Democrats and two Republicans.

Terms are four years, with a two-term limit due to Proposition B (2010).

Recent history
- From 1995–2013, all five seats were held by Republicans.
- Democrats gained seats in 2012 (Dave Roberts), 2018 (Nathan Fletcher), and 2020 (Nora Vargas and Terra Lawson-Remer).
- Nora Vargas won reelection in 2024 but did not take the oath in January 2025 for safety reasons, leading to a special election.
- A special election was held on April 8, 2025, with a runoff on July 1, 2025 between Paloma Aguirre and John McCann; Aguirre won.
- Terra Lawson-Remer became chair in July 2025 after the runoff.
- The board temporarily had a vacant chair position in early 2025 during the Vargas situation.

Term limits and structure
- Each supervisor serves four years, with a limit of two terms.
- The board is officially nonpartisan.
- As of January 2021, the board has nine committees.
