Sam Houston–Texas State football rivalry
The rivalry is between the Sam Houston Bearkats and the Texas State Bobcats. Their first game was on November 20, 1915, and they played almost every year from 1915 through 2011.
Over the years, both teams were in several conferences: Lone Star Conference (1931–1983), Gulf Star Conference (1984–86), and Southland Conference (1987–2011). The series stopped after 2011 when Texas State moved to the FBS and joined the Western Athletic Conference in 2012. The rivalry was renewed in 2024 at NRG Stadium in Houston.
All-time series record: Texas State leads 50–38–5.

2011 recap: The final meeting as conference rivals, Sam Houston State beat Texas State 36–14 in San Marcos, clinching the Southland Conference title.
Renewal game (2024): As FBS teams, Texas State (Sun Belt) hosted Sam Houston (Conference USA) at NRG Stadium. Sam Houston won 40–39 on a game-winning field goal with 6 seconds left after trailing by 22 points early. ESPN rated it the 72nd best college football game of 2024.
