The Weser Cycle Path passes through the village. In Gimte you’ll find a hotel, a restaurant, a kiosk, a driving school, a bakery and a grocery store.
Gimte was founded in 970 as Gemmet and was the site of Hilwartshausen Monastery. The Marien-Kirche church, founded in 1006, celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 2007. Until the 1960s, timber rafting and fishing on the Weser were important sources of income, along with wood processing and linen processing.
Gimte is twinned with Sannois, near Paris, France. The village has two sports teams: TuSpo Weser Gimte (founded 1919) and 1. FC Gimte (founded 1994). TuSpo offers football, badminton, table tennis, kids’ sports, gymnastics and other activities; 1. FC Gimte plays football, ESDO and volleyball.
