Louis Richard (politician)
Louis Richard (March 1, 1817 – November 13, 1876) was a farmer, store owner and lumber businessman in Quebec who became a politician. He represented the Kennebec division in the Legislative Council of Quebec from February 5, 1874, to November 13, 1876, as a Conservative, succeeding Isidore Thibaudeau and followed by Joseph Gaudet.
He was born in Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand, Bécancour, Lower Canada, to Charles-Auguste Richard and Marie-Esther Hébert. He started as a farmer in Stanfold county in 1840, later opened a general store and got involved in the lumber trade. In 1841 he married Hermine Prince, and their son Édouard Richard later served as a Member of Parliament from 1872 to 1878.
Richard served as mayor of Princeville in 1857 for one year, and again from 1872 until his death. He ran unsuccessfully for the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada for Kennebec in 1862. In 1874 he was appointed to the Legislative Council of Quebec for Kennebec and remained in office until his death in 1876 in Princeville at age 59.
