Fury Road (2023)
Fury Road (2023) was a Major League Wrestling event that took place on September 3, 2023, at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia. It streamed live on FITE, with some matches taped for MLW Fusion. The show kicked off a new partnership with New Japan Pro Wrestling, featuring Kushida, and it marked Matt Cardona’s in-ring MLW debut on a live broadcast after his signing was announced at Never Say Never.
Background: Fury Road is part of MLW’s Fury Road series, which began in 2018 as a TV taping and returned as a live special in 2019. In May 2023, MLW and FITE announced a deal to stream live events for FITE+, and Fury Road was scheduled for September 3 in Philadelphia.
Storylines and matches: The event built on scripted rivalries from MLW programs Underground Wrestling and Fusion. At Never Say Never, Kevin Blackwood and Matt Cardona were drafted in MLW’s Open Draft and slated to debut at Fury Road. On July 20, Mister Saint Laurent attacked Mance Warner on Fusion, setting up a Fury Road match between Warner and Cardona’s ally with a No Holds Barred Kiss My Foot stipulation. On August 9, Laurent announced a new talk show, Sessions by Saint Laurent, with a mystery guest to be revealed at Fury Road. On August 24, MLW announced a partnership with New Japan Pro Wrestling, including an inter-promotional match between Tony Deppen and Kushida, and Maki Itoh would appear through MLW’s Open Door Policy. The buildup also featured the feud between The Samoan SWAT Team and The Calling, leading toward a Weapons of Mass Destruction title match for Jacob Fatu against Rickey Shane Page at Fury Road.
