Saint-Denis-de-Brompton
Saint-Denis-de-Brompton is a small municipality in southern Quebec, in the Estrie region. It’s about 145 kilometres east of Montreal and sits in a wooded area by Lake Brompton.
History and status
- The Brompton area was first recognized in 1801. The parish of Saint-Denis-de-Brompton was founded in 1922.
- The parish municipality of Saint-Denis-de-Brompton was created on March 6, 1935, from parts of nearby towns. It became a full municipality on November 17, 2012.
- Today it is a popular vacation spot because of its lakes. In 2021 a referendum approved plans to install water and sewers in parts of the area, including a loan of about $31 million.
People and language
- In 2021, the population was 4,594. The area is largely French-speaking, with some English speakers, especially those who work with tourists.
- The municipality covers about 75.5 square kilometres and has many private homes.
Government and representation
- The mayor is Denis Veilleux.
- Federally, Saint-Denis-de-Brompton is in the Richmond—Arthabaska riding.
- Provincially, it is in the Richmond riding. The current provincial representative is André Bachand of the CAQ.
- The community uses French for official government matters.
Education and services
- English-speaking students can attend Sherbrooke schools for both elementary and high school.
Notable features
- The local church is known for its stained-glass windows, created with help from local residents and a master glazier inspired by Claude Lafortune’s work.
