Donald Sumpter
Donald Sumpter (born 13 February 1943) is a British actor from Brixworth, Northamptonshire, England. He has worked in film and television since the mid-1960s and has appeared in many well-known productions.
He has three Doctor Who appearances (1968, 1972, 2015) and played the Time Lord President Rassilon in the 2015 episode Hell Bent. One of his early film roles was as real-life criminal Donald Neilson in The Black Panther (1977). He has taken on many TV and stage projects, including Dickens adaptations such as Bleak House (1985), Great Expectations (1999) and Nicholas Nickleby (2001). He was Uncle Ginger in The Queen’s Nose (1995–1998) and has appeared in films like Enigma (2001), K-19: The Widowmaker (2002), The Constant Gardener (2005) and Ultramarines: The Movie (2010).
Sumpter’s TV work includes Being Human, Black Mirror, Game of Thrones (as Maester Luwin), Endeavour, Les Misérables and Chernobyl. He has also appeared in The Bill, Midsomer Murders, Holby City and A Touch of Frost. His career continues into the 2020s with roles such as The Phoenician Scheme (2025).
