György Rubovszky
György Rubovszky (1 February 1944 – 21 June 2017) was a Hungarian lawyer and politician. He was born in Budapest into a family of lawyers. He finished secondary school in 1962 and earned a law degree from Eötvös Loránd University in 1970. He worked as a trainee lawyer, led the No. 14 Attorneys' Working Community from 1977 to 1991, and then ran his own law practice. He joined the Hungarian Lawyers Association in 1986 and the Independent Lawyers’ Forum in 1988, which helped in Hungary’s democratic transition.
Rubovszky helped re-found the Christian Democratic People's Party (KDNP) in 1989 and became deputy leader of its Budapest district. He served on the Budapest General Assembly from 1990 to 1994. In Parliament he was first elected in 1994 on the KDNP list and sat on several committees, including Constitutional, Statute Preparation, Justice and Standing Orders. In 1997 he left KDNP during internal party struggles, briefly joined the MKDSZ allied with Fidesz, became an independent, then joined the Fidesz group in September 1997 and the KDNP again in September 1998. He was elected MP from the Budapest list in 1998, served as vice chairman of the Constitutional and Justice Committee and on other committees, and was a member of the National Judicial Council. He lost his seat in 2002.
In November 2002 the KDNP unity was restored and Rubovszky rejoined KDNP, leaving Fidesz. He was elected MP again on 16 June 2003, joining the Fidesz parliamentary group, replacing a member who had died. In 2006 he returned to the KDNP parliamentary group as deputy leader, and he continued to serve on key constitutional and judicial committees. In the 2010–2014 term he was MP from the Somogy County regional list and chaired the Immunity, Incompatibility and Mandate Committee (2010–2014). He also helped draft the 2011 constitution. After the 2014 election he became chair of the Justice Committee.
He died in Budapest on 21 June 2017 at the age of 73. His seat in Parliament was filled by Gergely Gaal in September 2017. Rubovszky was married and had two daughters; one daughter, Csilla Jenei-Rubovszky, is a KDNP member and deputy mayor of Belváros-Lipótváros in Budapest.
