Saeed Zahedi
Saeed Zahedi is a British-Iranian biomedical engineer and inventor. He is Technical Director at Chas A Blatchford & Sons and has received many honors for his work in engineering and prosthetics, including being knighted in 2017. He was also recognized on Debrett’s 500 List in 2016 for his influence in Britain.
He was born in Tehran on May 23, 1957, and moved to the UK as a teenager to study. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Polytechnic of Central London and did postgraduate work in biomedical engineering at the University of Strathclyde. His PhD, completed in 2007, looked at how to align lower limb prostheses.
Zahedi began his career as a medical physicist in the NHS, running a prosthetic clinic. In 1988 he joined Chas A Blatchford & Sons as a project manager, became Head of Technology at PDD in 1999, and returned to Blatchford in 2003, becoming Technical Director in 2006. He has also served as a visiting professor at Bournemouth University and the University of Surrey.
He led the Blatchford team that developed Linx, the first microprocessor-controlled lower-limb prosthesis where the knee and foot continuously communicate. Linx uses sensors to adapt to a user’s movements and environment and won the MacRobert Award in 2016. Zahedi has authored more than 125 publications and holds over 35 patents.
Among his many honors are the OBE (2000) for services to the prosthetics industry, a Special Commendation from the Prince Philip Designers Prize (2011), and recognition as a Royal Designer for Industry. He was knighted in 2017 for services to engineering and innovation and became an Honorary Fellow of the IMechE in 2019. He has played a leadership role in ISPO, serving as Chair of its Scientific Committee from 2020 to 2022 and remaining active with ISPO UK and international activities.
Zahedi is married to Shirin Zahedi (née Sadeghian) since 1988, and they have two children. He lives in London.
