SM Quiapo
SM Quiapo, also known as SM Clearance Outlet or SM Carriedo, is one of Manila’s oldest SM stores. It sits on Carlos Palanca Street in Quiapo, has four floors, and is near Carriedo Station. It opened in 1958 as Shoemart, a shoe shop started by Henry Sy. The first SM store wasn’t at the current Clearance Outlet; it began on Rizal Avenue, moved to Carlos Palanca Street, and finally settled at its present site in 1982. Shoemart later grew into SM’s first department store in 1972. The building now used by SM Quiapo sits on what used to be the Manila Royal Hotel (opened 1971), which was famous for its revolving restaurant; nearby hotels included Hotel Enrico and Mutya ng Pasig Tower. The store is owned by Henry Sy and managed by SM Investments’ foundation, SM Department Store Inc., and it was renovated to relaunch as SM Clearance Outlet.
