Ryle High School
Ryle High School is a public high school in Union, Kentucky. It opened in 1992 and is part of Boone County Schools. The motto is “The Union of Technology and Tradition.” The school colors are black, silver, and orange, and the logo is the Raiders. The principal is Matthew Shafer and the district superintendent is Matthew Turner. Ryle has about 109 full-time teachers and serves grades 9–12, with around 2,062 students (2023–24). The school is named after Larry A. Ryle, a former superintendent and teacher.
Ryle’s main rivals are Boone County, Cooper, Conner, and Simon Kenton.
Academics: Ryle offers Advanced Placement and honors courses. In 2017, U.S. News & World Report gave the school a college-readiness index of 49. Math proficiency was about 50% and English proficiency about 72%. About 58% of students took AP exams, and 72% scored 3 or higher on AP tests.
Athletics and activities: The Raiders have earned state and regional honors in several sports. Baseball won regional championships in 2007 and 2013. Boys basketball won district and 9th Region titles in 2002 and played in the state tournament. Girls’ basketball won the 9th Region and the state championship in 2019. Softball won the state championship in 2006 and was runner-up in 2007, with other strong finishes in following years. Soccer was state runners-up in 2006 and 2011 and reached state semi-finals in 2017, 2022, and 2023. Football was state runner-up in 2006. The Ryle marching band, started in 1992, competes in the Kentucky Music Educators Association state finals and has placed highly, with a best finish of second in 2025.
