Royal Quest (2019): Quick recap

Royal Quest was New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s first UK event. It took place on August 31, 2019, at Copper Box Arena in London. The show was streamed live on FITE TV and later made available on NJPW World. Attendance reached 6,119, making it one of the best-attended non-televised promotions in the UK. It also marked the first time NJPW promoted a standalone event in the United Kingdom.

What happened at the event
- Eight matches were held on the card.
- Roppongi 3K (Rocky Romero, Sho, Yoh) defeated Ryusuke Taguchi, Shota Umino, and Ren Narita in a six-man tag match.
- Kota Ibushi and Juice Robinson defeated Bullet Club members Yujiro Takahashi and Hikuleo.
- Chaos (Will Ospreay and Robbie Eagles) defeated Bullet Club’s Taiji Ishimori and El Phantasmo.
- Los Ingobernables de Japón (Naito and Sanada) defeated Bullet Club’s Jay White and Chase Owens by submission.
- Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa) defeated Aussie Open to retain the IWGP Tag Team Championship.

- Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated Zack Sabre Jr. to win the British Heavyweight Championship (his first time holding that title).
- Kazuchika Okada defeated Minoru Suzuki to retain the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in the main event.

Road to Royal Quest
- Before the main show, Revolution Pro Wrestling ran the Road to Royal Quest tag team tournament in August 2019.
- The eight-team tournament was won by Aussie Open (Kyle Fletcher and Mark Davis), who defeated Josh Bodom and Sha Samuels in the final. The event helped build momentum for Royal Quest and its title matches.

Why it mattered
- Royal Quest was NJPW’s first independently promoted UK show, expanding their international presence.
- The event featured top NJPW stars, title changes, and significant story development, including Kenta’s integration into Bullet Club and Tanahashi’s British Heavyweight Championship win.

Where to watch
- Live on FITE TV and later on NJPW World (on-demand).
- The event is remembered for bringing NJPW’s style and big matches to a UK audience outside of a traditional TV broadcast.
