Romani people in the Netherlands
Romani people in the Netherlands are Romani who live in the Netherlands. They are part of the wider Romani diaspora. They make up a small part of the country’s population, but their history and experiences are often discussed in the Netherlands.
History:
During World War II, some Roma and Sinti lived in the Netherlands, along with about 11,000 caravan dwellers who were native Dutch. In 1944, Nazi authorities arrested 578 caravan dwellers and identified 245 as Sinti. All 245 were sent to Auschwitz, and only about 30 survived.
In 2021, King Willem-Alexander opened a memorial to Roma, Sinti, and Jewish victims of the Holocaust in the Netherlands.
