Rohde & Schwarz
Rohde & Schwarz is a German electronics company founded in 1933 by Lothar Rohde and Hermann Schwarz. Based in Munich, it now employs more than 15,000 people in over 70 countries and reported revenue of €3.16 billion in 2024/25.
The company makes equipment for electronic testing, broadcasting and media, cybersecurity, radiomonitoring and radiolocation, and radiocommunications. It also produces gear for wireless networks, aerospace and defense, homeland security, and critical infrastructure. Rohde & Schwarz runs three main divisions: Test & Measurement, Technology Systems, and Networks & Cybersecurity, and its products include test instruments, TV and radio transmitters, signal generators, secure communications gear, and radar and satellite systems.
A notable product line is Soveron, a family of software-defined radios for military use that operate across 30–600 MHz with fast frequency hopping to resist jamming. Soveron is used by the German Bundeswehr and several other armed forces, and Rohde & Schwarz won a multi‑billion‑euro contract in 2022 to upgrade Germany’s battlefield communications.
The group has grown through acquisitions (for example, HAMEG in 2012 and SSE in 2022) and has formed partnerships such as the Rheinmetall joint venture RRS‑MITCOS in 2018 to develop digital military solutions. It also provides security scanners (QPS) for airports and other facilities, and supplies broadcasting transmitters used around the world.
Rohde & Schwarz has long worked with government and military customers, and its history includes involvement with intelligence and security agencies. The company has faced export-control and controversy concerns, including past reports of NSA monitoring and a 2013 Iran sales attempt; a 2024 report also cited transfers of some Rohde & Schwarz technology to Russia via a Czech subsidiary.
