Riseholme College
Riseholme College is a specialist land-based college in Lincolnshire, offering courses in Agriculture, Equine and Animal Management. It is part of Bishop Burton College and operates across two campuses: Riseholme Park near Lincoln and the Lincolnshire Showground campus.
The college has a long history. It began in 1949 as Riseholme Farm Institute, became Lindsey College of Agriculture in 1966, and then merged with other colleges in 1980. The county-wide college was run by De Montfort University in 1994 and transferred to the University of Lincoln in 2001. It was renamed Riseholme College in 2007 after Caythorpe Court closed, and joined Bishop Burton College in 2012.
Courses and campuses: Riseholme offers Agriculture, Animal Management, Equine and Land-based Engineering. In 2015 the Showground campus opened to offer degree courses and new facilities, including a Learning Resource Centre, a canteen, three engineering workshops and an Animal Management Unit with more than 100 animals. A second phase in 2016 added the Agri-Tech Health and Nutrition Centre with specialist labs and food science facilities, and the Sports and Health Science Centre with a fitness suite, an Olympic-standard sports hall and an all-weather, flood-lit pitch.
Campus layout: Riseholme Park houses equine facilities, while most other facilities are at the Showground campus on a 200-hectare site. The Old Hall, completed in 1744, is a Grade II listed building on the grounds.
Equine Unit: Opened in 2002, it includes two indoor American barns for up to 30 horses, two outdoor arenas, an indoor arena, a horse walker, AI facilities, a treadmill and a DIY yard. The college runs a Cleveland Bay breeding programme, with Lindon Principle as the main stallion.
Student and staff numbers: About 757 students (roughly 750 undergraduates and 7 postgraduates) and 127 administrative staff.
