Dimorphic root system
Dimorphic root systems have two kinds of roots that do different jobs. The taproot grows downward to reach water, while lateral roots spread near the surface to collect nutrients. The plant adjusts to rainfall: more surface roots form when rain is heavy, and the taproot becomes more important when rain is scarce. This flexibility helps many plants survive in places with intermittent rainfall, including arid regions with wet and dry periods.
