Richard Kamwi
Richard Nchabi Kamwi is a Namibian medical doctor and politician from SWAPO. Born in 1950 in Ioma, Zambezi Region, he trained as a physician at Technikon Mmadikoti in Pietersburg, South Africa, graduating in 1980. He became the first black health inspector in Katima Mulilo. In 1984 he was relieved of his post and in 1985 arrested for political subversion, after which he went into exile in Botswana and joined the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia until 1989. He returned to Namibia, resumed his work as a health inspector, and joined the National Assembly in 1999. Kamwi served as deputy Minister of Health and Social Services from 2000 to 2005, and then as Minister of Health and Social Services from March 2005 to March 2015. After leaving government, he took up farming on Rimini Farm in the Otavi-Tsumeb-Grootfontein area. In August 2024 he was awarded the Most Brilliant Order of the Sun, second class, by President Nangolo Mbumba.
