Kennedy half dollar mintage figures

Kennedy half dollars have been minted in the United States since 1964. The 1964 coins were 90% silver. From 1965 to 1970, the coins were 40% silver in a clad composition. After 1970, they were copper–nickel clad with no silver.

From 1992 to 2018, 90% silver coins were produced for special Limited Edition silver proof sets. Starting in 2019, these sets used .999 silver.

The Bicentennial coins of 1975 and 1976 carried the dates 1776-1976. The 1970 and 1987 Kennedy halves were issued only in collector sets, not for general circulation.

Declining demand led to 2001 being the last year normal circulation half dollars were issued. From 2002 onward, minting numbers were smaller and the coins were sold to collectors at a premium.

In 2021, half dollars were again released for general circulation. For the 50th anniversary, the Mint issued a 3/4-ounce gold Kennedy half dollar in .9999 fineness dated 1964-2014.
