Character actor

A character actor is an actor known for supporting roles that are unusual, distinctive, or interesting. They don’t usually play the lead, but their parts are substantial and memorable. Character actors may look or sound different from the movie’s star, and many have a distinctive look or skill that makes them easy to recognize, even if you don’t know their name. Some people refer to them as “that guy” actors.

A character actor’s career can include a wide range of roles or a steady specialty. Some are versatile and can play very different characters (the so-called chameleons like Gary Oldman or Christian Bale). Others are famous for a particular type of part (such as Harvey Keitel as tough characters or Christopher Lloyd as eccentric ones). They may also bring special talents, like dancing, riding, or boxing, that help them fit genre films. Many character actors work for decades, with prolific performers like Margo Martindale staying in demand and respected by peers.
