Frontera Energy is a Canadian oil and gas company that specializes in heavy crude oil and natural gas, with a focus on Colombia and Peru. It owns and operates a large portfolio of oil blocks across several basins in Colombia (including Llanos, Sucre-Co Lower Magdalena, Cesar Valley, Putumayo, and Magdalena basins) and in Peru (Ucayali and Maranon basins).

The company traces its roots back to 1982 as Petro Rubiales in Colombia and has undergone several name changes and mergers. In 2008, it merged with Pacific Stratus Energy to form Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp, which grew to become the largest independent oil company in South America around 2010. By 2011, it accounted for a significant portion of Colombia’s oil production growth. In 2015, the company renamed itself Pacific Exploration and Production to reflect a broader Latin American focus. Facing financial difficulties, it filed for bankruptcy protection in 2016 and, in 2017, renamed Frontera Energy and relisted on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Headquartered in Toronto, Frontera Energy is led by CEO Orlando Cabrales Segovia. In 2013, the company reported revenue of about US$4.6 billion, operating income of US$1.1 billion and net income of US$430.4 million. It employs around 2,500 people and has several subsidiaries, including Meta Petroleum and Pacific E&P Holdings.

Frontera Energy has faced criticism over labor, community and land-use issues in some regions but remains active in developing oil and gas assets in Colombia and Peru.
